2012 Honda Fury Horsepower

know this is a racing forum, but rec.motorcycles seems to be mostly
swearing ---.
Looking at the specs for the Honda Fury chopper, I'm puzzled to see a
modern motor, with 3-valves per cylinder, fuel injected, overhead cam,
of a massive 1,300cc capacity --- produce just 59bhp.
You'd think a Boy Scout troop working in a garden shed, if they
cobbled together a motor with those specs, would see more power. Did
Honda engineers have to work hard to REDUCE the power --- an odd task
for a m'cycle engineer?
Does the motor run on just a dribble of fuel to get "good" mileage?

The Honda Fury is a V-twin engine and 59 hp in a 1300 is decent hp or average hp for that size cc V-twin. It may seem to be a low in power but this is not a race bike but a chopper. You will never see this bike on the track but rather bar hopping. IMO, it was designed for this purpose, bar hopping that is.
You will get higher hp when you get into more valves/cylinder much higher rpm and greater fuel and air delivery systems not necessarily displacement. A GSXR 600 inline 4 produces about 115 hp but there is a good chance that the 59 hp Fury will beat the GSXR off the line. The 600 does not begin to make the 115 until it reaches high rpm's. The engineers of these bikes do have it right, they get a ton of hp out of small displacement engines for those that want it and avg. hp in cruisers and choppers that desire that type of ride.
I'm no expert but that is the gist of it all and no a troop of boy scouts could not produce more hp in a shed.

Sadly Honda cruisers have never been inspireing for power out put. - Perfectly reliable just never very fast. I can only hope that as the Furry based models become more popular that after market parts will become more available. At which point you may be able to talk me into a Saber.
Yes the motor is indeed choked off significantly from the manufacturer and going through the basic three; pipes, filter and fuel processor will yeild some better returns. But things like cams and high compression pistons will be necesary to pull off any impressive numbers. Just remember, it's Honda... The nice people. NMc

Concidering how many times I've managed to break the law on bikes < 250CCs (and even scooters) producing between 5 and 25hp I think that 59 is plenty. Remember the street aint for racing, who cares how fast your bike is when you can't legally go over 60-75mph?

By that logic no bike with mirrors, turn signal stalks or a license plate mount has any right to be sold with more than 20hp. In fact the bike manufactures should be held legally responsible for every speeding ticket written. I think I'll try that for my next ticket. It's down right entrapment you know?
But it is true that 59 horse is fairly low considering the size of the motor. My 800 makes a little less than that and carries me confedantly into super legal speeds. NMc

How did you derive that from my post? The manufacturers aren't to blame, the consumers that constantly need bigger and better are to blame, the manufacturers are playing to their base but my point still stands, you don't need that much horsepower on anything short of a race bike. If I could do 105 with 25hp why would you need 59hp? 110hp? Hell 300hp on some of those 1300cc+ bikes. Seriously, what's the point? If you're doing track days, drag racing, flat tracking, etc. it makes perfect sense but on the road, what are you trying to prove? Who cares about the HP?

Well it is true that lots of HP is more likely to get you into trouble than out of it, there are certan situations where being able to squirt into an opening can save your bacon.
I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be here today if if I was sitting on 25hp when I had my last accident. I got rear ended going about 20 mph (the car that hit me was going between 40 and 50) I was in first gear on a Triumph Rocket 3 (140 hp, and 140 foot pounds of torque) I saw the guy in my mirror about a half second before he hit me and I immediately jacked the throttle WFO, and I'm pretty sure that the only reason he didn't just roll up & over me was because of my forward inertia, so instead of going over me at impact my bike shot forward out from under me and I landed on his hood and immediately learned that hood surfing isn't any fun at all when the car under you has their brakes locked up, my bike was totalled, but I walked away with just a scratch on my arm, if I hadn't had a motor that could propel me from 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds I think I would have been in very deep doo-doo, big horsepower isn't the do all save all but it does have it's good points.

Hummmm.....I like both. The comfort and no buzzzz of the C90 but the hp of the G. It sure is nice to tap into that 98 hp and zip away.
