Yamaha FX HO

RIDE is a computer-controlled feature that works with the digital throttle system. It provides controlled braking and reverse functionality.

RIDE is an intuitive digital control system. The right trigger controls forward speed and the left trigger controls reverse as well as deceleration. Additionally, a quick squeeze and release of the left trigger put the FX HO into neutral. So now when driving, squeezing the left trigger will make it decelerate in half the usual distance. More importantly during testing, the BCU (Boat Control Unit) regulated thrust when the handlebars were turned while decelerating, providing critical steering control.

Yamaha FX HO

The RIDE system is digitally controlled by the engine control unit that sends the appropriate signals to the boat control unit.

The FX HO is powered by the proven Yamaha 1.8 Liter four-stroke, four-cylinder, high output, electronically fuel injected, normally aspirated marine engine, driving a 155 mm high-pressure jet pump unit. The engine is easily accessed under the main seat with plenty of room all around making maintenance hassle-free.

Yamaha makes the FX HO engine easily accessible simplifying daily checks and regular maintenance.

Electronic Configurations

The FX is equipped with electronic trim which is controlled on the left side with thumb buttons. It adjusts the jet nozzle up or down allowing it to raise or lower the bow attitude when riding. Located on the right-hand side is the cruise assist control. When riding at or above 3000 RPM, the lower set button is depressed until there are three beeps. Then the throttle can be pulled back all the way, and speed control is then adjusted by using the up and down buttons. For no wake mode, hold the blue button until three beeps are heard. Then without holding the throttle, the machine will run at approximately 5 mph (8.05 kph).

The up-down arrows on the left handlebar control the vehicle trim. The no-wake button is on the right handlebar and, when activated, converts the up-down arrows from trim to no-wake speed adjustment.

The premium dash panel has a large analog-style speedometer in the center and two digital multifunction displays located on either side for detailed user information. The display modes can also be accessed from the dash or the remote buttons located just below the handlebars.

The dashboard consists of a combination of analog and user-selectable digital readouts.

Another premium-level feature is the Yamaha security system with remote . A key fob remote locks and unlocks the ignition and has an engine limiter setting. Several presses of the button put the FX HO in L-Mode and an indicator will appear on the panel. This then limits the total revolutions of the engine, making the WaveRunner ideal for less-experienced riders.

Outside Features

The FX HO seating can comfortably fit up to three riders with a raised back support for the driver. Generous side padding on the cowling allows the driver to more firmly lock the body into position with the knees. Yamaha also likes the use of different materials and textures to maximize styling and comfort. Passengers have a well-designed handhold that wraps around the back of the seat, which accommodates hands of all sizes. There's also a useful, but very discreet, tow eye located under the observer seat.

Yamaha FX HO

The Yamaha FX HO is designed for 3-up riding. Notice the raised portion behind the driver's position for added comfort.

The aft platform is large and features excellent footing thanks to a deck that's covered in soft-touch, non-skid foam. A sturdy retractable boarding step has also been fitted to the back of the FX HO. It extends down and low enough for any size person to easily reboard.

There's plenty of storage on the FX HO, 33.2 gallons (125.66 L) to be exact. The large forward compartment offers space for a day's ride and it has a gas strut to assist with lifting the hatch and holding it open. The helm offers the driver a pair of quick access storage options. The first is a dry box on top of the helm console that's good for cell phones, while the second box located under the handlebars is ideal for water bottles and other small items. An additional dry storage compartment is located under the rear seat. Inside is a handy, removable water-tight container. The designers also made room for a wet storage compartment in the back of the FX HO for tow ropes or deck lines. The compartment houses the freshwater engine flush connector, making cleaning out after saltwater rides convenient.

The forward storage compartment includes a water-tight case for the onboard portable fire extinguisher.

Measurements

The FX HO has a length overall of 140.2" (356.11 cm) and a beam of 48.4" (122.94 cm). She weighs in at 829 lbs. (376.03 kg) dry and carries 18.5 gallons (70.03 L) of fuel. Our test revealed that the extra length in the hull makes this watercraft an exceptional cruiser that has a solid and comfortably soft ride. On performance runs, average top speed was recorded to be 62.6 mph at 7400 rpm while burning 13.6 gph. Now best cruise usually doesn't apply to a watercraft but most of the time it will run 32.6 mph at 5000 rpm, where the fuel burn was 5.1 gph. Roughly speaking, that's about five hours before a refuel.

Yamaha FX HO

The FX HO reaches a top speed of 62.6 MPH.

Maneuverability was outstanding thanks to the RIDE system. Starting at full speed, it can decelerate in almost half the distance. The design of the reverse bucket with its clever geometry provides impressive turning control when in reverse. The switching from forward to neutral to reverse with RIDE was almost instantaneous adding to the overall controllability of the FX HO.

Overall, this machine is deserving of the title luxury watercraft and comes equipped with all the features needed in a cruiser style. Because of its speed-limiting key fob, it is a safe vehicle for beginners. Additionally, its high output engine also makes it ideal for more experienced riders. Couple all of these features with its generous storage capacity and all the ingredients for a fun and exciting day on the water are now met.
